Unobvious is my doodle project. I started it in May 2020 — lockdown, naturally — with one rule: at least one doodle a day. I told myself I’d do 365. I went well past it.
It didn’t start as doodles, mind. The first version was called Produce More (@producemore), me banging on about making more and consuming less, all the usual productivity stuff. That got boring fast, so I renamed it Unobvious and started drawing instead. Much better idea.
It’s all built on visual puns — that lovely idea of a smile in the mind. Quick, minimal, usually black on white: a phrase or a thought twisted into a picture that makes you go “oh, nice” for half a second. There are more than 700 of them.
Of all my daily projects — Novl Cuisine, Nice Smile Sir and Gramophoney — this is the one that really stuck. One of the doodles even ended up in Steven Bartlett’s first book.
It’s parked at the minute. I didn’t quit so much as get bored of the repetition and wander off to make podcasts and videos instead. But it’s still sitting there, waiting for me to come back to it. I probably will.
